What is Respite Care at home?
Respite care (sometimes called respite services) is a type of short-term support where a highly trained carer steps in to handle your caring duties for a specific period of time.
Whether you’re juggling a heavy workload, planning a family trip, or simply need time to rest and recharge, respire services are designed to ensure continuity for your loved one.
Respite care is as flexible as you need it to be and tailored to your loved one’s unique needs and preferences, with support typically including:
- Help with household chores
- Personal care (i.e. bathing and toileting)
- Medication management
- Preparing delicious, nutritious meals
- Support to attend social events and community groups
How can Respite Care help you?
You can’t properly support your loved one if you’re physically or emotionally exhausted andignoring the warning signs of burnout can be harmful to your health and well-being.
The goal of respite care is to offer you the space and time you need to relax and recharge until you’re ready to return to your caring duties, rested and revitalised.
Respite can also offer support in the event of an unexpected crisis, with a respite carer stepping in for you as you handle emergencies or personal issues.
Benefits of Respite Care for your loved one
Respite care is designed to ensure continuity in your loved one’s support, stepping in until you’re able to return to your caring duties—but it’s so much more than that.
From a fresh perspective on their needs to greater independence and autonomy, respite care boasts multiple benefits for your loved one, practically and emotionally.
In many cases, a planned period of respite can alleviate any tensions that may have built up from the day-to-day realities of care, improving relationships and easing frustrations.
Whether it’s a short period of companionship care while you’re away or to offer more practical support, respite services are flexible and bespoke.
Is Respite Care a short-term option?
Respite care is a flexible type of support, intended for hours, weeks, and days, rather than longer periods. Its goal is to prevent disruption to your loved one’s care if you’re away, whether for personal or professional reasons.
And it doesn’t have to be a consecutive period (i.e. back-to-back), either. It could be a few hours in the evening, a fortnight while you’re on holiday, or a few days while you handle personal business.
The duration of short-term respite care is flexible and entirely up to you and your loved one to decide, but we’ll offer advice and guidance if requested.
Respite Care FAQs
Who is Respite Care designed for?

Do people with dementia do better at home or in a nursing home?
While respite care is available in care home settings, many people with dementia fare better in their own home as it minimises disruption, confusion and upheaval.
It also allows people to enjoy the type of focused, one-on-one attention that reflects the type of support they're used to, further mitigating any potential discomfort or disorientation.
Can you tailor dementia care to an individual’s needs?
Dementia care can be tailored to an individual, and care plans are designed with a person’s unique needs and preferences in mind, both medical and personal.
Whether it’s the frequency or type of support, every point of a dementia care plan is designed to offer bespoke support.
